Introduction

Make a Successful Transition to Digital TV

As cable operators move toward a successful digital TV (DTV) transition, Cisco is well positioned to help you take advantage of the new opportunities for your site.

Cisco DTV solutions can help you successfully prepare for and manage the transition to DTV. With them, you can meet your expanding business needs today and into the future, addressing consumer demands for more freedom and choice in their entertainment experiences.

DTV Mandate

On February 17, 2009, federal law requires that all full-power television broadcast stations in the United States stop broadcasting in analog format and broadcast only in digital format. Many other countries have similar plans to halt analog broadcasts, although the cutoff dates vary.

Achieve Digital TV Success

To help you prepare for and manage the digital TV (DTV) transition, Cisco offers:

• Excellent solutions for high performance, high quality and longevity

• Space- and power- efficient solutions

• Experience, resources, scale, and expertise to help your site succeed

In order to prepare for the DTV transition, consumers will have to take one of three actions by the analog cutoff date:

• Purchase a digital-to-analog converter box at retail

• Purchase a digital TV set

• Subscribe to a video service provider, like cable, with service installed on all TV sets

Deliver Advanced Digital Services

With Cisco Digital TV (DTV) solutions, you can define and increase service tiers while delivering advanced digital services. New opportunities include:

• Special offers around “lifeline” services to entice the “over-the-air broadcast” consumers to choose cable

• Accelerating the “all digital” strategy by replacing older set-top models and adding outlets in the home

• Investigating new bandwidth solutions at the headend level: 1GHz tuning upgrade, Switched Digital Video, Driving fiber deeper into the plant

Cisco DTV solutions let you transmit at higher resolution for dramatically better picture and sound quality, for an enhanced user experience. You can also transmit several programs at once ("multicasting”); and because DTV uses less bandwidth per program, you can offer more channels. You can also offer interactive video and data services not possible with analog technology.

Cable set-tops offer more advantages and advanced services than digital-to-analog converters. Table 1 compares their capabilities:
